Yes, there’s a great difference between a doctorate degree (Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or DPhil) and the undergraduate programs where students earn the (Dr. title). Most undergraduate veterinary medicine students and pharmacy students earn the title Dr. after intense clinical work coupled with some extra courses which normally takes about 6years to complete. For a person to earn a PhD/DPhil, a student is required to complete a one year or two years masters work before they embark the intense 3 or 4 year graduate work to get PhD which is purely research based. This takes between 8-11years to complete from (BSc to PhD). At the end of the PhD it is highly recommended that the candidates comes up with an original thesis which will add new knowledge to the particular field of study.
