Geomatic Engineering has become a popular engineering course offered by most of the engineering schools in Ghana. Currently, the following schools in Ghana are known to offer Geomatic Engineering:

    – Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi
    – University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa
    – KAAF University College, Accra

What is geomatic engineering all about?

Geomatic engineering is a field of engineering that has to do with the use of technology to survey the earth, generate maps and make meaning out of the data that is generated through various technologies.

It also involves the use of spatial techniques to understand, plan, organize, monitor, and manage planet earth. The spatial data and maps obtained are then used for various purposes including planning, property protection, and determining of the exact location of various resources.

Geomatic Engineering basically includes the disciplines of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Land and Engineering Surveying, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Cartography, Geodesy, Hydrography, Cadastral Surveying, and Land Information Management

What do Geomatic Engineering students study?

Some of the courses that geomatic engineering students will study include:

    • Geodetic Surveying
    • Geographic Information Systems Application
    • Spatial Database Systems
    • Cadastral Surveying
    • Principles of Valuation of Land and Building
    • Cartography
    • Basic Land Surveying
    • Land Law and Registration
    • Astronomy

    What do Geomatic Engineers do?

Geomatic engineers are responsible for designing, developing, and operating systems that can be used to collect and analyze spatial data about planet earth (the land, oceans, natural resources, etc.)

What is the duration for studying Geomatics Engineering?

Geomatics engineering is offered as a Bachelor of Science degree and therefore the various institutions offer it as a standard four (4) years programme.
