Hepatic encephalopathy is a complication of either acute or chronic liver disease. It presents with disordered central nervous system (brain) function, due to the inability of the liver to detoxify ammonia and other chemicals. Some of the causes include: 1. Viral hepatitis 2. Hepatic encephalopathy is a complication of either acute or chronic liver disease. It presents with disordered central nervous system (brain) function, due to the inability of the liver to detoxify ammonia and other chemicals.
Some of the causes include:
1. Viral hepatitis
2. Alcoholic hepatitis
3. Cirrhosis of the liver
4. Hepatocellular carcinoma
5. Drugs such as halothane, isoniazid, paracetamol overdose, herbal preparations
Apart from these, there are some other factors which are known to precipitate encephalopathy in people with pre-existing liver disease. Some include:
